In June 2016, Pulitzer, Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award winning composer/lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda accepted the Best Score Tony Award for his groundbreaking musical, Hamilton. Earlier that same day, a horrifying shooting massacre occurred at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and Miranda’s acceptance speech, written in the form of a sonnet, shined a light on the anti-LGBTQ act

When senseless acts of tragedy remind us

We live in an incredibly divisive time: hatred often underscores our national politics, acts of unthinkable violence regularly fill the airwaves of our news media, and armed conflicts around the world threaten the cause of freedom and tear families apart. This evening’s program chooses love. We explore and exalt love in all its forms:

Philia — the bond of friendship;
Eros — the romantic passion between two people, no matter their gender;
Storge — the powerful love between a parent and their child; and
Agape — the all-encompassing love of humankind.
