Holiday Program

Cantemus’ holiday repertoire ranges from Great Britain to the American Southwest. British composer Benjamin Britten’s beloved Ceremony of Carols will feature the women singers of Cantemus with guest harpist Tomina Parvinova. But what other choral work uses harp? American composer Conrad Susa came up with the perfect “accompaniment” — Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest, a collection of Spanish, Catalan, Puerto Rican and Mexican carols. He describes the work: “…the overriding image of a Southwestern piñata party for the new baby led me to add guitar and marimba to Britten’s harp and to compose connective music and totally re-conceive the carols.” Guitarist Steven Kirby and Mirimba/Vibraphonist Abe Finch join the 32 singers for this and several other pieces, and all three guest artists will perform solo works.
