Meet Our Choral Intern, Julia Norcross
(May 18, 2021) — Cantemus continues its efforts to build interest in, and exposure to, the beauty of choral music among young talent.
Our current intern, Julia Norcross of Beverly, is a 17-year-old junior in a secondary home-schooling cooperative in Boxford, who began interning with Cantemus in January 2020.
Julia says she’s enjoyed singing from a very young age, and remembers early on “dancing to Stevie Wonder and loving Beatles music.” Since that young age, her experience has included roles in musicals such as Annie, Chocolate Factory, and ensemble singing with adults and older children.
She went on to singing in her church youth choir, and more recently the adult church choir, as well as taking several years of voice lessons and learning to play the guitar.
Julia views her internship with Cantemus as an asset to a well-rounded musical experience to include classical repertoire, as well as learning to read music. The latter forms both inspiration and challenge in her work with Cantemus.
As all musicians know, the worldwide pandemic has made music practice and performance far more challenging, especially in developing skill and interacting with fellow musicians. Julia counts as a major benefit her interactions with members of her chorus section in learning the music, although this was not possible with the public health emergency affecting all musicians. Her voice lessons have been continuing, and she looks forward to the day when group singing will again be possible.
She recently enjoyed the Cantemus Driveway Choir rehearsal at the Topsfield Fairgrounds on March 23, the closest substitute to singing together at this time.
Julia has appreciated the open and warm reception she received from fellow singers and Director Jane Ring Frank, all of whom have been helpful and kind in enhancing her learning. Her opportunity to sing with adults will enhance her future aspirations in music, as avocation and/or career.
She views her future musical life as a soul-nourishing companion to her ambitions to study political science, law, and to advocate for social justice, her major ongoing passion.
